Clay Courts

Hard courts, as the name suggest, are courts with “hard” surfaces. The courts are typically made of concrete (years ago asphalt) and have a semi-rough textured sports surface applied on top. They tend to be the easiest type of courts to play due to their predictable ball bounce, consistent speed, and uniform surface for movement. Hard court speeds can also be adjusted by the court’s re-surfacer/painter by adjusting the silica sand ratio of a sports surface mix. For example, by adding more silica sand to the sports surface mix, a sports surface can become “slidier” and allow for players to move faster on a court. To reduce high impact on the body, hard courts can be upgraded with sports surface cushion systems which do not affect ball bounce or movement on the court, but do reduce the impact on joints and overall body during play.

A huge benefit of hard courts is that they require minimal maintenance. Other court surface types such as grass and clay courts require constant watering, seeding, brooming, etc. Most maintenance a hard court requires is removing debris from the surface using a blower. Occasional (every 4 – 12 months) court rinsing with a water broom can help a court retain a more vibrant look, but it is not something that is done frequently nor should it be done frequently (too much washing can degrade the sports surface prematurely).
